Suzie's Page

Yup, you guessed it! This page is all about Suzie, my adorable (but bad-tempered) dwarf albino hamster. She's solid white, with red eyes and pink nose and feet.

Suzie loves her home. After living in an empty, plain glass aquarium at the pet store, she thinks her new home is a castle! She lives on top of my dresser in a metal wire cage with a red plastic bottom, a large curved yellow tunnel sticking out of one side, a squeaky turquoise wheel on one side, and a glass tube for her water. Under the opening to the tunnel she has a block of wood carved to look like a treasure chest with three holes in it for her to play in, and on the opposite side of her cage is her rapidly-expanding next. She has a small dish of food, but she prefers to eat her treat sticks instead. These are small plastic sticks covered with a mixture of various seeds coated with honey. Her other favorite foods are baby carrot sticks, lettuce leaves (especially the white, crunchy part; she won't eat the limp ends of the leaves), cheese, sunflower seeds, and dried corn. She also likes the little red crunchy hearts that come in her hamster feed mix.

Her favorite activity is chasing cats, but she spends most of her time sleeping. She also enjoys biting anyone or anything that gets within her range. Since hamsters can't see well, I let her smell my finger before I reach into her cage so she won't be afraid of me, but she usually grabs my finger and tries to put it in her mouth. She always has a cardboard toilet paper tube in her cage to play with, but she prefers chewing it up and shredding it to playing in it. I brush her occasionally with an old toothbrush, but she prefers to bite and attack the toothbrush rather than have her hair brushed. Another favorite thing she likes to do is run in her wheel, but only while I'm trying to sleep, and she does her best to make sure it squeaks. She also likes to rattle her teeth against the bars of her cage just to wake me up. Suzie likes attention and since she is nocturnal, she sleeps all day and is awake all night. She thinks I should be nocturnal, too, so that I can keep her company all night!

Like anybody who lives in a 12x18 inch space, Suzie doesn't have a lot of room to exercise in or explore, so I let her out of her cage every night for a few hours. She has a large yellow plastic ball for exercise, and I put her in that and let her roll herself around the house and see what kind of trouble she can get into. (Trouble follows Suzie like a shadow, and she can find more of it to get into that I can!) The ball also hooks into a frame, so if she gets into too much trouble or she figures out how to open the ball's door and get out of it, I put her in the frame on top of my dresser where she can run as much as she likes without going anywhere. She doesn't like that as much, because she can't chase any cats from on top of the dresser, but she does enjoy the fact that she can run much faster in the frame than on the floor. She also likes to get the ball moving very fast and then stop running suddenly. The ball keeps moving and she gets flipped up into the air slightly. She thinks that's a lot of fun!

Suzie's future goals are to be elected President, make cats illegal, and take over the world. (She watches too many Pinky and the Brain cartoons! :) She also hopes to secure a book deal for her manuscript, which is an exposé on the goings-on in pet shops after dark. (She claims the dogs set up a gambling table and play cards using money from the cash register, among other things.) She is also an amteur photographer, although she also likes to have her own picture taken and has contemplated a job in modeling. She is also a talented actress who has appeared as a regular guest star in the hamster soap opera "The Young and the Gerbils" on the Pet Rodent Channel. She's currently working on computer game software in her spare time, and her new game, "Bite the Cat", debuting worldwide early next year for the PlayHamster2 games console. She denies that there's any truth to the rumor that she's involved with Hugh "Hamp" Hamster of the Playcity Mansion, but sources close to the two say they are practically engaged. She is also a spokeshamster for the national "Stop Rodent Alcoholism" organization and is proud to say that her drink of choice is distilled drinking water and that she's never even tasted an alcoholic beverage. (Althought she downplays the fact that she's a recovering veg-aholic.) She's also a mentor for several young girls through the "Hamsters Helping Kittens" foundation. Her favorite web page is the Hampster Dance site, her favorite color is red, and her favorite place to play is in my bedroom, because the hardwood floors are easier for her to roll around on than the carpets in the rest of the house. Her favorite song is the "Hamster Hoedown Music" available on the Hampster Dance site.
